Gaynell Rogers is a native of New Orleans and a Southern Food enthusiast who loves to cook and entertain. She is married to Grammy nominated and award winning slide guitarist and producer Roy Rogers.

She is a graduate of the Baumann School of Holistic Nutrition and Culinary Arts in Sonoma, California.  Her new cookbook, coming in 2011, is all about enjoying Southern Cuisine naturally.

She’s a member of the Southern Food Alliance, has gone to Italy to cooking school three times in Tuscany, as well as a cooking school in Barcelona, Spain.

As a wise sage of the South once said “the problems of the world can be solved around a table with good hot gumbo and cornbread...”

Southern food: crawfish, fried chicken, Mardi Gras and jazz and blues music. Healthy food: tofu, brown rice, classical music and vegetable medleys.  Is healthy Southern food an oxymoron?  After all, how can you cook with natural wholesome foods and have it taste great?  You can.  And it’s easy.

How do I know? I know because I’ve done it.  I’ve entertained celebrities from the music business—including Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Charlie Musslewhite, Steve Miller and John Lee Hooker—for the past 30 years, always cooking from my Southern roots.  Then, in 1997 and in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer and colon cancer and I had a huge wake-up call that included learning to cook healthier food.   I am now proud to say that I am a certified Natural Chef, and working on the new first cookbook Gaynell’s Kitchen: Natural Down Home Cooking from a Wayward Southern Belle (see Bookshelf for More!)

As a chef and cooking teacher who loves to entertain, I have three passions:  cooking with natural, organic, whole and unprocessed foods that feed my guests’ well; cooking Southern; and having a great time in the kitchen.

Enjoy the site, sign up for e mail updates and here’s a toast to the new South and home cooking, naturally!

All the best,
Gaynell Rogers
